Ten Art Events in Africa
Africa is home to a vibrant and diverse art scene. Don’t miss these standout events.
Art Cairo (Egypt)
Art Cairo is a premier platform dedicated to showcasing both established and emerging artists through galleries from the Middle East and North Africa, offering local, regional, and international audiences a window into the artistic richness of the region. This seventh edition of the fair runs from 23 to 26 January at The Grand Egyptian Museum. The 2026 fair will unfold under the annual theme “Arab. Art. Here” and celebrates the Arabic language as a living art firm, with 26 galleries participating and an engaging talks programme.
1-54 Marrakech (Morocco)
The seventh edition of 1-54 Marrakech takes place at La Mamounia Hotel from 5 to 8 February. 20 galleries from 12 different countries feature in this edition. The fair will host 8 Morocco-based galleries. Institutions such as Loft Art Gallery, MCC Gallery, and La Galerie 38 will offer both local and international audiences the opportunity to experience the region’s artistic vitality and cultural richness. Alongside Moroccan galleries, four new international galleries: ELLEPHANT (Montreal), Imvelo Art Studios (Lusaka), The Art Affair (Luanda), and The Lobster Edition (London/Tunis)—will participate in 1-54 fairs for the first time. Aside from the fair, the side events and exhibitions, including four at the private museum MACAAL, should be a treat.
Cape Town Art Fair (South Africa)
The 13th edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair will see 126 exhibitors (42 being new to the fair) from 34 cities descending to the tip of the African continent from 20 to 22 February. This edition is guided by the curatorial concept, “Listen”. This fair is larger than previous editions and makes Cape Town Art Fair the largest on the African continent is measured by the number of exhibitors.
Dakar Biennale (Senegal)
Founded in 1990 with the aim to make of it a show-window of art and literature in Africa, and initially alternating between literature and art, it subsequently transformed in 1993 and sine 1996 has been specifically devoted to Contemporary African Art. Typically held from mid-May to mid-June, the 16th edition has not yet been announced and some platforms suggest that it will be held from November to December 2026, given that Senegal will also be hosting the Youth Olympics in late October / early November and aligns with the timing of when the biennale was held in 2024.

Latitudes Art Fair (South Africa)
Latitudes Art Fair returns to Johannesburg for its fourth edition from 22 to 24 May. Galleries and artists from Africa and its diaspora showcase their art throughout Shepstone Gardens. This fair is located on a unique (as art fairs go) and magnificent three-acre property that has been featured in several Netflix movies, and a firm favourite drink at the fair is an Aperol Spritz, a nod to the Italian heritage of one of the co-founders of the fair.
Last year, the fair also hosted a special exhibition showcasing artwork from Botswana from five exhibitors, curated by Latitudes Curator Boitumelo Makousu, and it is expected that a country-specific exhibition will be unveiled for this fourth edition too.
Chale Wote Street Art Festival (Ghana)
While street art is typically not the scene for art collectors, the Chale Wote Street Art Festival is a good excuse to visit the growing art scene, consisting of established galleries, ambitious projects and artist-led spaces in Ghana. This contemporary festival showcases Ghana’s thriving art scene, transforming James Town’s streets into open-air galleries filled with murals, installations, and performances. The festival typically happens in August with dates usually announced in June

Based in Johannesburg, ArtJoburg is the continent’s leading and longest-running contemporary African art fair. For the last 18 years, Art Joburg has played an instrumental role in developing and sustaining a commercial industry that centres around African and diasporic practitioners. Its 19th edition will be held from 4 to 6 September 2026 at the Sandton Convention Centre.
ArtJoburg typically is the most pan-African fair on the African continent. Visitors can also look forward to the exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery of the 2025 art fair prize winner Thato Toeba, a mixed-media artist from Maseru, Lesotho, known for their powerful photomontages and assemblages exploring identity, power, and history through layered narratives.
Alongside the fair, Open City features programming at numerous venues across the Johannesburg related to culture, starting on 27 August 2026 and now extending all the way to the 10th of November in the same year.
East Africa Art Biennale (Kenya)
Founded in 2003 by the East Africa Art Biennale Association, the biennale connects artists from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and neighbouring countries. Organisers designed it to circulate ideas across borders rather than focus on a single city. From 15 September to 20 November 2026, the Nairobi National Museum (Kenya) will host the main exhibition, while satellite shows are planned in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Kampala (Uganda), Kigali (Rwanda), and Bujumbura (Burundi).
This 11th edition carries the theme “Common Grounds, New Horizons: Reimagining East African Futures”.
Lagos Biennial (Nigeria)
Titled “The Museum of Things Unseen”, the Lagos Biennial returns for its fifth edition from 17 October to 18 December 2026. Created and founded by the artists collective the Àkéte Art Foundation in 2017, it positions the city as a hub for supporting and promoting contemporary art through exhibitions, public programmes, publications, research, and residencies.
An exciting development is that the biennial will create its own pavilion and art collection. The Àkéte Collection will consist of pieces from the last four editions of the biennial and donations and loans of artworks from international museums, private collections, and individuals, and will be unveiled in October 2026.
ART X Lagos (Nigeria)
Following a grand milestone 10th edition last year, ART X Lagos founder and director Tokini Peterside-Schwebig announced that “The next decade is about building boldly…. Strengthening education, mentorship, and access for emerging creatives is where I believe the future of ART X lies.”. While the 2026 dates have not yet been announced, ART X Lagos typically takes place at the beginning of November each year.

The Whitney Biennial is the longest-running survey of American art, and has been a hallmark of the Whitney Museum of American Art since 1932. Initiated by the Museum’s founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney as an invitational exhibition featuring artwork created in the preceding two years, the biennials were originally organised by medium, with painting alternating with sculpture and works on paper.
The 82nd edition will feature the works of 56 artists, duos and collectives. It runs from 8 March to 30 August 2026 and is held at the Whitney in New York.

Miami Art Week (United States)
Miami Art Week typically closes out the art calendar for the year. It comprises three events happening in the city, in and amongst several presentations by galleries and other city spaces. Art Basel Miami Beach has been running since 2002 and is typically the most prominent fair event during Miami Art Week. PRIZM, Untitled Art and NADA Miami accompany Art Basel Miami Beach. Miami Art Week 2025 runs from 30 November to 6 December 2026.
Two Art Events in South America
After a busier 2025 for South American art, there are fewer fairs this year. Given that the 12th edition of ESTE ARTE in Uruguay has already passed (it was held from 4 to 7 January 2026), remember to look out for it early next year in 2027.
